hw 14

Read Chapter 14 in your text and Lesson 14.  Then complete this homework. Work to understand all problems even though all problems may not be assigned.

1. Explain how TCP and IP work in concert with each other to provide reliable internetworking.  Then explain the main differences between these two protocols.

2. IP

    a. Name four protocols that depend on IP directly.

    b. What are the two most important functions of IP?

    c.  What is the dotted decimal address for the following binary address:

      10100011 11001011 00001010 10010001

    d. What class is the address above?

    e. Knowing the class of the address, what would the network mask be for this addresses (binary)?

    f. What is the network addresses for this address (binary)?

    g. What is the range of network addresses for Class A addresses?

3. Define the following terms:

    a. network mask
    b. dotted decimal
    c. time to live

4. Sketch an IP header and label the fields within it.

5. What is the difference between a routed and a routing protocol?

6. What is a multiprotocol router?

7. Describe the hierarchical parts of a class A, class B and Class C address?

8. How many host addresses can be used when a class C address is used without submetting?

9. How many class B networks are there?

10. With only 10 users on each LAN and no subnetting, how many class C addresses would be needed for a school that has an internet connection, two student LANs, an instructor LAN and a staff LAN?

11. How many Class C addresses would be needed in problem 10 if subnetting is permitted?

12. What are the first four bits of a:

    a. class A address?
    b. class B address?
    c. class C address?
    d. class D address?
    e. class E address?

13. What binary value [describe in English] is in the host region of an IP address that is:

    a. a network address?
    b. a broadcast address?
    c. the first useable host address?
    d. the last useable host address?

14. Use the binary AND operation to determine the network address that the following IP addresses belong to and identify if the given address is a host address, broadcast address or a network address:

    a. 10.238.35.172
    b. 172.150.88.2
    c. 221.247.193.0
    d. 4.2.0.0

15. What mask would be used with a:

    a. class A address?
    b. class B address?
    c. class C address?

16. What mask would be used when subnetting by borrowing five bits from a:

    a. class A address?
    b. class B address?
    c. class C address?

17. What is a "wire address"?

18. Borrow three bits from the network address 192.168.15.0 and determine the following:

    a. subnet mask in binary and in dotted decimal
    b. value of the binary bits used to identify the third useable subnet
    c. the binary bits in the host region used to identify the first useable host
    d. the binary bits in the host region used to identify the last useable host
    e. the third subnet's network address in binary and dotted decimal
    f. the fifth subnet's network broadcast address
    g. the last useable host address in binary and dotted decimal for the sixth useable subnet
